I think everyone, to various degrees, wants to be understood and therefore belong. Each of these experiences taught me something new about what it means to belong, what is a community, and why communities are the centre of belonging.
I think of a community as a fingerprint. I think of the people in a community as dots that overlap to create the lines of that said fingerprint. Within those dots, are so many lived experiences, values, ambitions, insecurities, worries, and beliefs. It shapes the community, and shapes how they are captured in the photos I take. Even if I’m not aware of it right away, I know their fingerprints have imprinted bits of me, and eventually, I will learn something new about dots.
My definition of a photographer has shifted over the years. When someone asks if I can take photos for them, they’re giving me permission to shift their memory. They will inevitably merge my subjective view of an experience with their own. There’s a certain responsibility I feel with that realization.
I can’t help but constantly observe the interactions around me whether I’m taking photos or not. Person to person; people to people. What does it mean to preserve something that’s finite? To document something that holds various degrees of value? To be aware of a moment, or fully engrossed in the present?
I see [ and 200+ synonyms ], but I can’t capture everything.
